Tied funding to promote culture

15 August 2007

LEADING Ipswich Cultural organisations have again received tied funding support from Ipswich City Council.

Organisations including Ipswich Junior Eisteddfod Society, The Silkstone Eisteddfod Society, Ipswich Model Band, Ipswich Thistle Pipe Band and the Ipswich Little Theatre Society have all been awarded funding for their important activities throughout the year.

Arts, Community and Cultural Services Committee Chairperson Councillor Charlie Pisasale said the Silkstone Eisteddfod would celebrate its 81st Eisteddfod this year.

"The eisteddfod plans to provide a ‘stage' for performers with more than 50 sections for competitors ranging in age from nine years to open adult in the categories of piano, instrument, organ, vocal, choral, bands, speech and drama.

"Council's sponsorship for the Silkstone Eisteddfod is used to support the aggregate awards in piano, organ, instrument, speech and drama sections.

"The Ipswich Model Band is the principal community concert band in Ipswich and is available to perform at civic functions such as the Ipswich Festival, Anzac Day Commemorations, the Christmas Twilight Parade and a myriad of other community functions.

The band is focusing on assisting the development of musical talent by recruiting young musicians from local secondary schools.

"The Ipswich Thistle Pipe Band will host the ‘Ipswich 2008 Gathering of the Clans Queensland Pipe Band and Solo Piping and Drumming Competition' in August 2008 in Limestone Park.

"The band performs at a range of civic and community functions and is always keen to provide solo pipers when necessary and was also the proud recipient of the Ipswich City Council Cultural Entertainment Award for 2007 for staging the annual Ipswich Tattoo at the Ipswich Civic Hall.

"The Ipswich Little Theatre Society conducts an annual program of performances for the benefit of both regional audiences and performers.

"They stage their One-Act Play Drama Festival at the Incinerator Theatre annually in August.

"This festival is in its 53rd year, which makes it the longest continuously running drama festival in Australia.

"The society is immensely proud of the National Trust-listed building, the Burley Griffin Incinerator Theatre.

"Their primary aim as a community theatre company is to provide top class live entertainment and to maintain and enhance their unique theatre as an Ipswich icon," Cr Pisasale said.

"The Ipswich Junior Eisteddfod Society requested financial assistance to conduct the 63rd Ipswich Junior Eisteddfod.

"The 2008 event will be staged in the Ipswich Civic Hall from May until August 2008.

In May it will be the music events, dance in June and July with speech and drama in August.

"The Eisteddfod provides some 5000 youth performers with an opportunity to perform and compete in the disciplines of ‘instrument, voice, dance, speech and drama, art and literacy'.

"It is a prestigious award to win, with participants from as far a field as Townsville, Rockhampton and Sydney regularly attending."
