Everything you ever wanted to know about babies and toddlers

27 September 2007

CELEBRATING and strengthening families will be the theme of the inaugural Ipswich Baby, Toddler and Child Expo to be held at the Ipswich Civic Hall (Nicholas Street) on October 25 between 9:00am and 3:00pm.

Arts Community and Cultural Services Committee Chairperson, Councillor Charlie Pisasale said the Expo was being staged by Council's Community Development Branch in conjunction with St Andrews and Ipswich Hospitals and the Friendly Care Pharmacy.

There will be more than 40 stalls offering information on just about everything there is to know about bringing up a child including day care groups, available services, photographers, baby and birth associations, support groups, kindy organisations and cosmetics.

The Expo will also provide guests with the opportunity to hear from specialist guest speakers in a range of topics around the well-being of babies, toddlers and young children.

"The morning sessions will include obstetrician and gynaecologist, Dr Sophia Elmes who will answer many of those frequently asked questions on practical advice for pregnancy.

"Paediatric dietician, Jan Blanch will speak about nutritional issues for babies and young children while parents and carers can learn about practical strategies to support healthy sexual development and how to respond to such questions from children from Family Planning Queensland's Gillian Schroder."

Cr Pisasale said the afternoon sessions would be just as important with Donna Conway from Friendly Care Pharmacy showing correct lifting and holding of babies.

"Detective Senior Sergeant Charysse Pond from the Queensland Police Service will talk about Project Safehands.

"Project Safehands is a social marketing and public awareness campaign targeting and hopefully helping to prevent physical abuse of children aged from zero to four years old.

"Paediatrician Dr Malcolm Miller will finish off the day with his talk entitled ‘Toddlers - Trials and Tribulations' which is designed to give tips on raising a healthy, well adjusted toddler."

There will also be free face painting, jumping castle, kinder gym and live entertainment.

"A Welcoming Babies Ceremony will he held from 10.00am to provide an opportunity for the Mayor, Paul Pisasale, to individually welcome children born this year (2007) in Ipswich.

"Each child will receive a commemorative certificate, native plant and have their photo taken with the Mayor.

"Numbers are limited so to register your child please call 3810 6659 to request a registration form."
