Japanese visit for care forums

23 October 2007

IPSWICH City Council will host local and international visitors at two forums on dementia and palliative care to be held at Ipswich Civic Hall tomorrow (October 24).

Mayor Paul Pisasale said the forums would be attended by local care providers and 23 delegates from Tokyo, Japan  representing the Love & Grace Welfare Aid Foundation who were welcomed to the city with a Mayoral reception yesterday afternoon.

"As Japan's society has become more westernised and their people are now the longest living in the western world, the challenge of looking after those suffering from dementia and similar diseases has become a real challenge for Japan," Cr Pisasale said.

"The Love and Grace Welfare Aid Foundation is a Christian run organization, originally started by an English Methodist Missionary in Japan at the beginning of the 20th Century.

"The organisation's primary focus is to provide aid to the physically and mentally disabled as the disadvantaged in Japanese society.

"Australia is recognized as being at the forefront of health and aged care and around 20 years ahead of Japan in this area, therefore prompting the Japanese interest in the fields of dementia and palliative care."

Cr Pisasale said specialist health care presenters from around the Ipswich Region would present tomorrow's forums in the Lockyer Room at the Ipswich Civic Hall.
