Ipswich City CouncilFestival of Theatre MediaRenovations for Civic Hall 20 December 2007 IPSWICH Civic Hall will undergo a program of maintenance and refurbishment early in the new year to address disability access and carry out improvements to the hospitality service areas. Works have been planned to start on January 14 and continue until to March 7, a time to cause the least possible disruption to the community, Arts Community and Cultural Services Committee Chairperson Councillor Charlie Pisasale said. "The Box Office service counter will be located at the Council's Customer Service Centre in the Ipswich City Square from early January until work is completed. The Box Office will be closed over the Christmas New Year period but will reopen on January 2. "Phone bookings for performances will be available as usual during business hours on 3810 6100 and tickets can be purchased on lie at www. ipswichcivichall.com.au." Cr Pisasale said the scope of works covered the construction of new toilets for the disabled, a major upgrade of the auditorium and the food preparation area. "Ipswich Civic Hall has undoubtably been one of the most premier function venues in Ipswich City for over 30 years. "In recent years it has undergone a large increase in patronage by the public for performing art shows and use of the various function rooms. "This high level of growth and support by the local community is expected to increase even further as the population of the Ipswich area continues to grow. "As a result the increased use of the Civic Hall has led to operational problems and concerns that have limited the ability of the Civic Hall to function efficiently. "The strains on the facility have also increased in this time prompting a design to address the issues and a decision made by Council to proceed." Cr Pisasale said in recent years a staged program of refurbishments had enhanced the capability of the building to be able to contend with national and international touring performances. "Staging and safety improvements have included the addition of a stage loading dock, refurbished flytower, digital lighting and sound equipment." Cr Pisasale said the Civic Hall would launch its 2008 Festival of Theatre in the new year with a spectacular line up of world class entertainment. -ENDS-
