Water infrastructure the focus of major industry briefing session

9 July 2008

DETAILS about Ipswich's water infrastructure were delivered to a crowd of 200 people from throughout Australia during a special briefing held in Ipswich last week.

Ipswich City Council's City Works Committee Chairperson Councillor Trevor Nardi said council had welcomed representatives from major Australian construction companies, engineering design, consultancy firms, financing agencies and general suppliers to the briefing which was held last Monday (June 30).

Cr Nardi said the briefing at the Ipswich Civic Hall had focused on the vision of the city and the importance of infrastructure to this vision.

"The way in which partnerships with the private sector are needed to achieve this vision was also highlighted," he said.

"Ipswich will be at the heart of growth in the western corridor and South East Queensland over the next 20 years and council has made capital investment provisions in its five year plans to enable this growth."

Cr Nardi said during the briefing, highlights of Ipswich Water's five year capital investment program were presented with  investment focused on securing Ipswich's water infrastructure to 2026.

"Council wanted to highlight to the sector through this briefing the growth and regional positioning of Ipswich and the western corridor in South-East Queensland.

"We also wanted to promote the partnerships that could become available to help council deliver vital infrastructure projects for the city."

"The water program has forecast that a significant amount of capital expenditure will be needed to support the growth that is expected to occur in the immediate future.

"This will create the need for council to work with a number of companies on a range of projects.

"Basically this week's briefing was designed to encourage the companies who attended to tender for the projects which will be constructed in coming years under Ipswich's water program."

Cr Nardi said the Ipswich City Infrastructure Project included a number of elements including:

  • Upgrades tothe capacity of the Goodna,Bundamba and Rosewood Waste Water Centres to meet infrastructure commitments detailed in theSouth East Queenslandregional plan;
  • 6.6 kilometres of trunk sewer upgrades in the Goodna catchment to service growth in Springfield and Redbank Plains;
  • 8.4 kilometres of large diameter trunk sewer upgrades to service the Yamanto area and;
  • 15 kilometres of trunk sewer upgrades that will service SwanbankEnterprisePark and Springfield and provide the first step towards linking the Ripley area to the Bundamba wastewater scheme.
