Sports summit for officials and administrators

28 August 2008

COACHES, officials and administrators of sports in and around Ipswich have the opportunity to brush up on their skills and learn new ones at the Ipswich Sports Summit on Saturday, September 20.

Parks Sport and Recreation Committee Chairperson, Councillor David Morrison said registrations were still being called for the Summit designed to provide sports clubs with the opportunity to exchange ideas and share knowledge and experiences of high profile industry professionals.

"Coaches and officials will benefit from four presenters on topics from increasing junior participation in sport through the Active After-School Communities program, what's involved in becoming a coach through to managing drugs and alcohol in sport and the role of a club canteen in feeding active kids.

"Rodney Coxsedge is the Regional Coordinator for the Active After-School Communities program and will provide information about the benefits of club involvement.

"Margaret Monaghan has more than 20 years experience in sport from the grassroots to the elite sporting community.

"Margaret urges coaches and potential coaches to develop their own coaching style. Her presentation relates to group dynamics, knowledge building, effective communication, skills acquisition and the legal issues around coaching."

Cr Morrison said the Good Sports Program in Queensland was designed to help sporting clubs to manage alcohol responsibly and reduce alcohol and other drug related problems.

"State Manager for the program, Steve Anderson will show Ipswich clubs how to promote and maintain a positive image and create a safe environment for players, members, families and supporters.

"Sports dietician and nutritionist, Kellie Hogan, will cover all the important issues for sporting canteens and provide all the healthy eating messages you'll require to pass on to your team."

Cr Morrison said the Ipswich Sports Summit would also include an important stream of information sessions for administrators.

"Club administrators will be provided with the knowledge and tools needed to retain, reward and recognise the army of volunteers who help make any club successful.

"Presenters will also cover issues like risk management including the requirement for Blue Cards, and the Council will detail some of the key support services available to sporting and recreation clubs in Ipswich," Cr Morrison said.

The Queensland Government's Department of Sport and Recreation will present the Ipswich Sports Summit in partnership with the Ipswich City Council on Saturday 20 September from 7:30am to 12:30pm at the Ipswich Civic Hall.

Contact the Department of Local Government, Sport and Recreation on (07) 3239 0770 or email rsvp@srq.qld.gov.au before Wednesday 17 September 2008 to register your place.
