Another bumper year planned for popular entertainment program

21 January 2009

TOP class international acts, award-winning national music stars and talented local performers combine in another event-packed entertainment program at Ipswich Civic Hall this year.

Ipswich City Council has released the 2009 Festival of Theatre - February to June events brochure which will arrive in local letter boxes with the latest issue of rates notices.

Arts, Community and Cultural Services Committee Chairperson, Councillor Charlie Pisasale, said residents who didn't receive rates notices could pick up a copy of the latest brochure at Ipswich Civic Hall.

A full list of events on sale is also available via the website at http://www.ipswichcivichall.com.au/ .

"We've got some fantastic events on their way to Civic Hall in the first half of the year and tickets are already selling fast," Cr Pisasale said.

"The 2009 program kicks off with popular ventriloquist David Strassman next month and an original plan for two shows has been extended to four to cope with demand.

"That show is followed closely by Time Warp - A Rocky Horror Musical Tribute which has two performances available.

"Ticket sales for these two shows alone are going through the roof which is excellent news.  It proves yet again that Ipswich residents will enthusiastically support quality entertainment options in their own backyard and council is very pleased to be able to provide this."

For music lovers, the latest events program includes performances by iconic UK band Smokie, award-winning Australian entertainers David Campbell and Troy Cassar-Daley and  ‘The Voice of Ireland', Tommy Fleming.

There's also tribute shows to Cat Stevens, Roy Orbison and John Denver, a unique production of The Magic Flute by Co-Opera and a spellbinding musical offering by Brisbane seven-piece Soul Gypsy.

If comedy is more your style, there is plenty to choose from including the acclaimed Busting Out! and Menopause the Musical, the annual Melbourne Comedy Festival Roadshow and a performance by the one and only Austen Tayshus.

Theatre-goers will enjoy La Boite's critically- acclaimed Walking By Apple Tree Creek and Perth Theatre Company's Baby Boomer Blues, while lovers of all things Irish will no doubt support the spectacular music and dance showcase The Rhythms of Ireland.

There are shows for the children to enjoy as well including X-Collective's Daisy May: The Impossibly Cool Cat and Spoon Tree Productions' Letter's End.

Local talent will also be in the spotlight with concerts by the Ipswich Orpheus Chorale and the Blackstone-Ipswich Cambrian Choir, the annual Ipswich International Tattoo, the latest offering by the Ipswich Seniors Concert Group - Ancient Roamin's, the locally-hosted Parade of Champions and the annual Dance of Colours.

"It's certainly a jam-packed program and if these events are anything to go by, the 2009 Festival of Theatre is set to be a winner," Cr Pisasale said.

"This amazing program continues to go from strength to strength and Ipswich City Council is extremely proud of the achievements so far.

"I thank the people of Ipswich for their continued support of the Festival of Theatre and look forward to catching up with them at several events throughout the year."
