The ongoing impacts of damage caused by recent severe weather has forced the postponement of twelve additional shows as the Ipswich Civic Centre extends its current closure until 26 April 2022 to continue restorative work.

Community, Culture, Arts and Sport Committee Chairperson Councillor Andrew Fechner said the city’s premier entertainment and function venue will extend the temporarily closure to best fix issues caused in recent weeks.

“Continued repairs and cleaning are required after further investigations revealed the Civic Centre sustained damage during the recent severe weather,” Cr Fechner said.

“The performing arts has been one of the hardest hit industries by the COVID-19 pandemic, so the Civic Centre’s extended closure will be upsetting to the recovering local industry as well as hospitality businesses.

“It was heartbreaking that the March community production of The Sound of Music season had to be cancelled, and now sadly we must also postpone a large number of performances scheduled during April including a rare visit from the legendary Indigenous singer Archie Roach.”

Councillor Fechner said the Ipswich Civic Centre team will contact ticket holders following discussions with promoters to lock in alternate dates, along with rearranging alternative venues for planned functions.

“While this is an unfortunate and frustrating situation for both the performing arts industry and audiences, we are asking the community to be patient as the many changes to shows and ticketing are worked through,” Cr Fechner said.

“The Civic Centre will provide further updates as the repair works progress.”
