Jazz Guitarist Dylan Russell presents an evening of engaging improvised music in the Cunningham Room. Dylan’s trio will be performing fresh original pieces and jazz standards in a variety of styles including bebop, blues and Latin jazz. The trio is rounded out by the experienced Ross Nixon (keyboards) and Joshua Batka (drums).
Dylan Russell is a jazz guitarist originally hailing from North Queensland and now based in Brisbane. He has performed at many venues and festivals including Brisbane Jazz Club, North Australian Festival of Arts, Northern Fringe Festival, Townsville Jazz Fest and Townsville Jazz Club. Also a passionate composer, Dylan is regularly writing, performing and recording original modern jazz.
Ross Nixon is a professional musician whose international career has spanned over thirty years. He has performed in prestigious venues worldwide including the Ritz Carlton in Osaka, Sheraton Resort Miyasaki, Tokyo Shiba Park Hotel, Abu Dhabi Sheraton Hotel as well as many cruise ships and international jazz festivals. In 2017, Ross released his album “The Removalist“, which was recorded in New York City with the legendary rhythm section of Curtis Lundy (bass) and Victor Lewis (drums).
Joshua Batka is rapidly establishing himself as a skilled freelancer and educator within the city of Brisbane. The “consistently exciting and engaging” jazz drummer has enjoyed mentorship from some of Australia’s finest jazz musicians at the Queensland Conservatorium of Music; such as the illustrious Darryn Farrugia, John Parker, Paul Hudson, James Whiting, Steven Newcomb, James Sandon and John Hoffman. Joshua’s busy performance schedule has included dates with the Conservatorium’s premier Big Band (The Con Artists), along with appearances at Doo-Bop Bar, Brisbane Jazz Club, Star Casino and many more.
