The Ipswich Civic Centre presents…
2021 was the 50th anniversary of Marvin Gaye’s musical masterpiece What’s Going On, which still today holds the coveted Number 1 spot in Rolling Stone’s 500 Greatest Albums of All Time. Many musicologists argue it is the most realised “concept” album ever produced and the single greatest collection of popular music ever recorded.
The title song is also Number 6 in Rolling Stone’s 500 Greatest Songs of All Time (updated/rebooted in 2021). The album reflected its time, and yet was revolutionary in the depth, variation and scope of its subject matter; and eerily prophetic of the current world in which we live.
Tyrone Noonan, former frontman of No 1-charting Brisband george, has been performing Marvin’s songs for many years with his jazz/latin/soul outfit Palimpsest, and it’s been a long-held dream of his to produce this show.
What’s Going On, a classic sequenced album, is performed in full with a short interlude between Side One and Two, alongside some classic hits from throughout Marvin’s hugely successful career.
This is no Broadway show; it’s all about recreating the legendary live experience of Marvin Gaye and never has there been a better time to witness the spectacle of a live performance of this album.
Tyrone completes a seven-piece band for this show, featuring some of Queensland’s finest musicians: Wil Sargisson on keyboards, James Mcintyreon guitars, Joshua Hatcher on saxophones, flutes and glockenspiel/keys, Chris Pearson on bass, Aaron Jansz on drums and Luis Manuel Basulto on percussion.
